France has recognized Palestine as an independent state, bolstering international support for the Palestinian cause. The move comes at a time when Israel is waging an offensive in Gaza.
France is the latest country to recognize Palestine, further increasing international support for the Palestinian cause.
According to BBC news, France made the recognition ahead of the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Monday (September 22). On the other hand, at least 37 Palestinians have been killed in continuous Israeli attacks on Gaza since dawn on the same day, 30 of whom are residents of Gaza City.
Earlier, in a video message, the country’s President Emmanuel Macron said that France’s only demand is the peaceful implementation of the two-state solution in the Al-Aqsa region in the Middle East.
In a recent interview with US media outlet CBS News, he said, “What France wants is for there to be two states side by side (in the Al-Aqsa area). One state would be Israel, which would recognize Palestine; the other state would be Palestine, which would recognize Israel.”
Incidentally, a global conference calling for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is starting today, Monday, at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York, USA. The conference is being hosted by France and Saudi Arabia.
Previously, several countries, including Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the United Kingdom, Canada, and San Marino, have recognized the Palestinian state.
